[The crowd standing outside the
door suddenly opens, and the captain
enters, puffing a cigarette. Stand-
ing in the doorway he addresses a
few words to Hitu, who then gets up,
and nodding solemnly to Anna com-
mands her to follow him. Hitu then
walks out door with the captain
Reri and her mother follow them
toward the door. Just before they
reach the doorway they embrace. The
mother takes the veil off Reri and
hands it to one of the old women.
Reri, head bowed in sorrow, followed
by the six old women, then goes out
the door. The crowd around the
doorway follows the procession, and
Reri‘s mother is left leaning against
the door in her grief.]
