"On the 15tth of April, by government
authorization the pearl diving grounds of Hikueru were
opened. As these pearl beds, the richest of them all,
have been closed for such a long time, the most famous
divers from the remotest of the Dangerous Isles have been
flocking here.
"Certainly there has been no disappointment so
far. Business never was better.“

CUT TO REPORT AGAIN:
"ONE An unfortunate accident has happened.

aboard
maybe [?] There is
one spot in the lagoon that is said to contain the richest
pearl beds in all the South Seas. But it is a spot the
natives avoid, too frightened even to paddle their canoes
over it, because they believe that these pearls are guarded
by an enormous man-eating shark. The accident proves that
they are right.
"A strange native, unfamiliar with this atoll,
laughing at their warnings, dived. All that was recovered
was the frayed end of his diving line.
"Hoping that I have the government’s approval,
I have put up a sign forbidding further diving in this
place.“
